I believe the “Age of Plentitude” is one of the most accurate terms to define what’s coming in a post-labor society. When AI, automation and robotics affects or takes over nearly 100% of human labor, we will have the opportunity to live in a true age of plentitude and abundance. Even though we live in a utopia compared to the medieval ages, we still need to solve for humanity’s baseline physiological and safety needs (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs). 46% of the earth’s population still lack clean drinking water. 2 billion people don’t have access to sanitation and clean water. Robotics and AI achieving AGI will drive the cost of everything down to almost zero, including the work needed to bring sanitary conditions to every living human. We will be able to deploy entire systems to fuel clean drinking water across the world. And that’s just ONE scenario of what humanity gains in the age of plentitude. Mindset is the biggest enemy. The Industrial Revolution age trained us to believe our literal economic and societal value existed only in work productivity. While idleness isn’t healthy, and productivity is a good thing if it’s attached to our meaning, we’re going to see a ton of displacement in humanity in the coming years because of this.
