Microsoft Axes Copilot GPT Builder: What's Next for AI?
"Microsoft Axes Ramp-Up on Copilot Pro AI Highlights Swift Change in Corporate Strategy"
In surprising turn of events, Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of its Copilot GPT Builder tool from its Copilot Pro service, barely three months post-launch. This tool allowed subscribers to forge their own personalized AI assistants for specific requirements, thereby streamlining effort and time.
Just a few months ago, Microsoft had revealed carefully curated Copilot GPTs that worked as a personal trainer, travel advisor, and culinary assistant. In quick succession, it integrated the facility to construct and disseminate similar custom Copilot GPTs using the Copilot GPT Builder further.
Much to the dismay of Copilot Pro subscribers, Microsoft has now confirmed the removal of the feature starting July 10, 2024. This decision has led to unanswered questions about why Microsoft decided to abandon the feature soon after its initiation. Microsoft stated that it's shifting its focus to commercial and enterprise-grade usage, momentarily suspending efforts in consumer applications.
In response, Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor who explores AI, remarked that he was stunned by Microsoft's speedy drop from consumer GPTs. He added that transitioning the custom GPTs to only enterprise usage might hinder the progress of innovation which, so far, has majorly stemmed from individual experimentations with the tool.
Although this tool will no longer exist, OpenAI continues to offer its GPT Builder to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users. Consumers can continue to enjoy the advantages and experience of generative AI tools, even as Microsoft revises its strategy.
